Well, well, as much as I was dreading it, the new year was here. "Why?" you ask. Well because it just meant that my time to float was basically around the corner. That. Is. All. I. Could. Think. About! Ok, here let me give you a quick working definition of "floating"--it simply means, you go to another unit where the number of nurses on staff is less than what is needed to take care of the number of patients safely for the shift. The allotted time I was protected from floating had come to pass...whyyyyy?!!!! 😫 😭 You know how boxers get that pep talk by their trainer in their corner in the ring before they face their opponent? Well honey, that was me everyday of January. Picture me clinking my made up boxing gloves, "If you float it's gonna be ok girl, you got this," I would tell myself. *nervous chuckle* That would play in my mind like a broken record each time I stepped foot onto the unit and saw the assignment on the board. Especially before even peeking at the corner titled "FLOAT". The day came when I floated...and guess what? I made it suckas, I survived! Don't we all? Sometimes we have to apply "Nietsche's idea of being superficial and taking things only at first glance, sometimes thats's just the most profound approach" (Holiday, 2014, p. 33). In other words, don't apply judgement to things, instead take them as they are. Remember "the perceiving eye is weak,...the observing eye is strong" (Holiday, 2014, p. 32). You have to remove all feelings and emotions from time to time. It can make things less stressful, scary, and intense. It lets you see things for what they are, "It's so much better to see things as they truly, actually are, not as we've made them in our minds" (Holiday, 2014, p. 24). Strip things down to the basics as Epictetus did. Always try to "Give yourself clarity, not sympathy..." (Holiday, 2014, p. 35). In reality it was not as I made things out to be. Can you believe things didn't go terribly wrong? I actually learned a couple of new things too. It's funny how once we do something we thought to be difficult and would inevitably fail at but come out victorious, we take the stance of "Pshhhhh, yeah, no biggie."😎 *brushing off our shoulders* As if we never broke a sweat, were on the verge of peeing our pants, had a panic attack when no one was looking, or didn't lose a wink of sleep. Hahaha! 😂. Yeah right people! But, in all honesty, that's the best feeling in the world. Knowing you were and are capable of doing what you thought and feared you could not. 💪🏼 🙌🏼 ** I hadn't posted an entry for #TheStoicSeries because for one I'm reading other books and put The Obstacle is the Way on hold. Second, I wasn't motivated to write on the points being discussed in this chapter. I mean the desire to write was definitely there, but for some reason when I was re-reading this chapter I felt like I had nothing to say. I felt I just couldn't relate to the points made with my present moment, thus no entry...and I didn't want to skip around in the book. Hey, sometimes we lose that motivation, inspiration --but it's ok. Just know that you have to find it again and hold on to it until you execute what you must! Enough jibber jabber. Alas, hope you enjoyed the new entry. "Don't let the force of an impression when it first hit you knock you off your feet; just say to it: Hold on a moment; let me see who you are and what you represent. Let me put you to the test. "
